M.E. diary

Ellesmere and stuff

I don’t know if anyone reading this knows how heavy a 9 stone woman in a wheelchair is but its heavier than you would think and much heavier than 9 stone plus a wheelchair should be! Jon went off to be Bruces roadie today and i stayed to spend a bit of time with Sheila (Jon’s mum) who is 87 and not too confident with walking outside the house. Sheila had a hair appointment so i pushed the wheelchair to the hairdressers, dropped her off and went for a lovely lunch, with A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly.

It was a lovely sunny day, if a bit windy, and i sat outside the Boathouse on the edge of the Mere. Ive just read that the mere at Ellesmere is the largest of 9 glacial meres that were formed when large lumps of ice broke off a glacier in the last ice age. Over the years the ice melted and the holes filled with water which gives us the meres as they are today.

I decided to eat healthily and ordered a hummus salad and bottle of still water. I was overwhelmed by how helpful and friendly the staff and visitors sitting and walking around me were. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the other lunchers were free with friendly smiles a joke or a few kind words. A different world than the one im used too. I read my book for a while then wandered back for Sheila. They was a delay so i had another 30 minutes of reading in the sun then Sheila offered to treat me to a coffee and a piece of cake. I had neither coffee or cake but enjoyed the outing and the chat with Sheila very much. I was feeling very very tired, eyes rolling into my head tired and had to really push myself to stay awake and to get back to the house with the wheelchair. I truly dont ever want to have to use a wheelchair but when you are that tired its hard not to think about it –  i gave it one or two longing, wishful gazes i can tell you!

Im going to have a nice early night so that im ready for Saturday at Uttoxeter Racecourse.
